Speed Faults Guide
If your broadband connection seems to be slower than usual, it may be useful to investigate the following issues before contacting your account manager.
Where is my 8 meg?
While the Primus Business 8000 package is available to most – there is no guarantee that you will experience this speed all the time. There are many factors that can contribute to the reduction of broadband speeds - like how far your office is from the local exchange, when you use the internet and if your wires and filters are in good condition. It’s important to remember that broadband is shared during the peak hours, which naturally slows it down.
What speed is your broadband running on?

Speeds measuring less than the maximum you’ve registered for aren’t necessarily faults, they could be due to the factors we’ve just mentioned. If speeds are very slow – then the fault should be explored.
Have you set up the cabling properly?
Your RJ11 cable, provided with the Primus modem/router – should be fitted directly into (via micro filter) the wall phone socket. You should not have an extension cable there – this can interfere with your connection and speed.
Does your PC coincide with the following minimum specification requirements?
Pentium 200Mhz Processor or Equivalent
32MB of RAM
At least 150MB of hard drive space
Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000 Professional or Windows XP
Operational USB port
Are you using any file sharing/P2P programs?
These programs usually take up quite a bit of bandwidth and when they run in the background, can affect your internet’s connection speed. Try shutting them off to see if any changes occur.
Is your PC infected with adware or a virus?
Adware is software that is automatically installed and collects information from a user’s computer, usually without their knowing consent. If your PC is contaminated by one of these troublesome programs, it can experience much slower broadband speeds. If you think this might be a problem, try downloading Adaware – which is a program that searches your PC for pesky programs that slow your applications.
Viruses can also hinder the performance of your PC and broadband therefore we highly recommend investing in a high-quality, up-to-date anti-virus software like Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee VIrusscan.
If you have gone through all of these factors and still believe that there is a problem with your broadband connection, then contact your Primus Account Manager. Click here to read about our fault escalation process.
